{"id":35419,"date":"2019-07-19T15:50:54","date_gmt":"2019-07-19T15:50:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mindful.org\/?p=35419"},"modified":"2026-04-01T03:20:47","modified_gmt":"2026-04-01T03:20:47","slug":"four-ways-to-foster-gratitude-in-children","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mindful.org\/four-ways-to-foster-gratitude-in-children\/","title":"Four Ways to Foster Gratitude in Children","content":{"rendered":"\n<p>If you have young children, you probably spend a lot of time reminding them to say \u201cplease\u201d and \u201cthank you.\u201d But the importance of gratitude goes beyond good manners\u2014<a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/greatergood.berkeley.edu\/pdfs\/GratitudePDFs\/3Froh-BlessingsEarlyAdolescence.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">research shows<\/a> children who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindful.org\/an-introduction-to-mindful-gratitude\/\">practice gratitude<\/a> are happier and more optimistic, and more likely to build strong relationships.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This video from <a href=\"https:\/\/greatergood.berkeley.edu\/video\/item\/talk_with_kids_gratitude\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Greater Good Science Center (opens in a new tab)\">Greater Good Science Center<\/a> offers a simple practice to help foster gratitude in children:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How to Talk with Kids about Gratitude\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4dBk-3SmoJ0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-four-ways-to-foster-gratitude-in-children-nbsp\">Four Ways to Foster Gratitude in Children&nbsp;<br><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Grateful kids and teens are less likely to experience depression or jealousy, and more likely to do well in school, according to research from the <a href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/record\/2011-06113-001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">American Psychological Association<\/a>. Researchers have identified four parts of gratitude that help children practice gratefulness using the \u201cnotice-think-feel-do\u201d questions:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Notice:<\/strong> This helps children see the amount of thought that goes into a gift. For example, if they\u2019re given a sports jersey you could say, \u201cNotice how it\u2019s your favorite player\u2019s name?\u201d or \u201cNotice how it\u2019s in your favorite color?\u201d <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Think:<\/strong> Help children understand why they received the gift by asking, \u201cWhy do you think you received this gift?\u201d Maybe it\u2019s for a birthday, or holiday\u2014or maybe just because someone loves them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Feel:<\/strong> Give children the space to process their emotions by asking, \u201cHow does this gift make you feel?\u201d Common answers could be happy, excited, or loved.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Do:<\/strong> Remind children to express thanks by asking, \u201cIs there a way you want to show how you feel?\u201d It could be by making a card, giving the gift-giver a hug, or simply remembering to say thank you.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Kids may not always be able to answer all of these questions, but practicing them will reinforce the habit of expressing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindful.org\/appreciation-meditation-kids\/\">gratitude and appreciation<\/a> over time.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Children who learn to practice gratitude are happier and more optimistic in the long run.
